The Hat

Remember when we had a picnic?

…Gorgeous, sunny day at Taft Gardens, flowers blooming all around? A LOT of T.W. Hollister Vermouth? Okay…

But do you remember Cassandra’s incredible hat?

I thought I was just borrowing, like, a really cool hat.

NIGHT SKY - YOUR NIGHT SKY CHARTED ONTO A HAT

The immortal moment
when the entire universe aligned for you
charted & crafted onto a hat.

Satya Twena, after all, is a very cool Ojai hatmaker. And I knew the general idea behind the hat. From Satya’s website:

So, so sweet. What a tremendously cool hat.

But it turns out that this is a very special, very cool hat.

“The hat shown is the night sky the moment my daughter was born. I decided to add 33 stars (my age the day she was born) — I will wear this hat until she turns 18 — then it will be given to her as an heirloom.”

I’m not crying, you’re crying!

What story would your hat tell?

Meanwhile, more hats!

This is Satya Twena

Satya’s started hatmaking in 2010 when her mother (Ojai Artist, Pamela Grau) asked for a soft hat to cover her bare head as she began losing her hair from cancer treatment.

Satya continued making hats for herself, her mother, and their friends out of her NYC apartment using a jiffy steamer and her home oven.

Satya owned and ran Manhattan's last hat factory, Makins Hats until 2017.

Satya and her team continue to preserve the legacy of handcrafted hats and works between her studio in Ojai and her NYC shop at Neiman Marcus, Hudson Yards.

Her Hats are Incredible

“I have always loved the desert. One sits down on a desert sand dune, sees nothing, hears nothing. Yet through the silence something throbs, and gleams...”

Each Hat tells a Story

There was a rainbow halo around it...
When a local Chumash leader in our community heard about the moon Sage was born under, he told us it was called ts̓apʰa saʼawhay 'the moon with a ring around it'.
