From curator Cassandra C. Jones:
"In the Realm of Spiders" examines our complex feelings about spiders and the spectrum of emotions, between fear and wonder, that arachnids and their webs evoke.
Through photography, ceramics, claymation, drawing, and installation, this collection of work illuminates spiders' remarkable abilities as architects and hunters, the geometry of web formations, how they express unique personalities, and their contributions to humanity as pest control and pollinators.
From Joel Fox's neon-painted webs and Steve Sprinkle's evocative poetry to the whimsical charm of Jamie Stratford's claymation spiders, Jeff Man's illustration, and Rosemary Hall's powerful sculptural work that explores the microcosm, this exhibition challenges perceptions and reveals intricate connections that bind us to the natural world. It celebrates our relationship with arachnids, urging us to confront our fears, embrace the unknown, and celebrate their extraordinary diversity and importance to life on Earth.
Ojai’s vibrant art scene is set to expand this November 1st with The School Show, an inspiring exhibition that brings together works from both students and teachers across six local schools. San Francisco-based artist and brand designer Cole Ryder, originally from Ojai, is bringing his latest interactive exhibit, "New Earth Hotline," to Spore Space, located at 221 E. Matilija St. in the heart of downtown Ojai. Opening on Saturday, October 19, the exhibit invites visitors to engage with recorded phone messages in which individuals share one truth they believe to be certain. Ryder, who holds an MFA in Design from California College of the Arts and a BA from UCLA, has a diverse background spanning architectural design, woodworking, and fabrication. His artistic work reflects a commitment to fostering a more thoughtful and compassionate future.
From Studio Channel Islands:
SCIART25 explores the rich creative community that has enabled Studio Channel Islands to flourish over the last quarter century.
Each of the artists in the exhibition has played an important role in the development of the organization. Hiroko Yoshimoto and Tom McMillin were instrumental in the creation of the first studios and exhibition spaces.
This intimate exhibition presents three compelling still life works by renowned artists across centuries. Jacob van Hulsdonck’s Still Life with Peaches and Plums (c. 1640) showcases the Flemish master’s meticulous detail and vibrant depiction of fruit. André Derain’s Still Life with Fruit (c. 1911) offers a bold, modernist interpretation, blending color and form. Finally, Georges Braque’s Glass and Fruit (1932) exemplifies his Cubist approach, exploring the relationship between everyday objects and abstract space. These works together celebrate the timeless allure of the still life genre across artistic movements.
