Ali Golden’s journey into fashion began over fourteen years ago in Oakland, where she first launched her line. Initially, Ali was in graphic design and marketing but soon realized something was missing from her work. In search of a more hands-on creative outlet, she pivoted to fashion: “I took my art and design experience and translated that to the more tangible medium of clothing.”
Ojai had always been on Ali’s mind, especially since she grew up nearby in Ventura. So when she moved back from Oakland and the perfect space opened up downtown, she jumped at the opportunity to bring her brand closer to home.
Her shop, located on Ojai Avenue, is thoughtfully curated, with an airy, inviting atmosphere that reflects Ali’s signature style. So, how do Ali’s designs fit within Ojai’s distinctive fashion scene?
“Ojai style feels like an eclectic mix of genres,” Ali explains. “But I do think there’s an overarching theme of lightweight and breathable because it’s too damn hot!”
This is so true; Ojai summers can be sweltering, but Ali has her customers covered. Ali’s designs perfectly capture Ojai’s laid-back vibe while adding a fresh, modern edge that pushes the local style forward. New Fall standouts include the Loose Barrel Pant, Oversized Shirt Jacket, and Overall Jumper in dark denim. Her raw silk plaid styles have developed a near-cult following, loved for their blend of texture and comfort.
In addition to her own line, Ali curates other like-minded labels that complement her vision. Standouts include Geel, known for its preppy yet relaxed vibe; Stine Goya, celebrated for bold prints and playful colors; and Rachel Comey, offering effortlessly cool, understated pieces. Her criteria? A commitment to sustainability and, of course, a playful use of color.
Ali also collaborates with local designers: “We love supporting friends’ businesses by carrying their jewelry or shoes or by hosting pop-ups.” Ali’s support for local artists extends to her store’s design itself. She recently teamed up with friend and textile artist Sally England to create a “soft” sculpture that hangs inside the boutique. The result? A silver bedazzled rope with loose tassels, blending Ali’s material choice with Sally’s distinctive knotting technique.
While collaborations and carefully curated brands add variety to her boutique, Ali stays true to her core philosophy: creating timeless yet playful staples with a focus on color and comfort. Ojai’s style is evolving, and Ali’s designs are at the forefront, reflecting the town’s growing embrace of vibrant fashion. Her approach remains practical, too — when asked what advice she’d give to someone opening a boutique in a small town, her answer is simple: “Be open seven days a week!”
