VORTEX: WE’RE TRYING TO DO SCIENCE

Title: Local Grocery Store Price Check – Quick & Easy Gig

Description: We are looking for people across the U.S. to visit any local grocery store and snap photos of price tags for 10 everyday grocery items. You will also document one fun or socially relevant "bonus item" and take a quick photo of the store exterior or receipt to identify the location.

Why? VORTEX is a hyperlocal online magazine in Ojai, California. We saw about 4 oz of broccolini for sale for $8 in our local store and got curious.

What You’ll Do:

  • Go to any grocery store near you.

  • Take clear photos of price tags for 10 specific grocery items (list provided).

  • Capture one fun or social challenge item (e.g., tampons, a fancy chocolate bar, vegan meat).

  • Answer the question: "Did anything surprise you?" in one or two sentences.

  • Take one photo of the store exterior or a receipt to confirm location.

  • Submit via Google Drive or email.

Requirements:

  • Must be in the United States.

  • Have a smartphone with a working camera.

  • No photography skills required—just clear, readable images.

Compensation:

  • Base rate: $20-$40 (depending on location).

  • Bonus: $25 for nice photos (each that is published).

  • Bonus: $5 for bonus question answers.

  • Payment via Fiverr/TaskRabbit/PayPal/Venmo.
